Most commercial spandex material is produced by dry spinning a polyurethane solution into hair-fine continuous filaments - a four-stage route that fixes the stretch, heat behavior and dye affinity of every fabric downstream.

1. Build the prepolymer. A long-chain polyether macroglycol reacts with a diisocyanate, producing an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer that becomes the soft, stretchy backbone of the fiber.
2. Extend the chains. A diamine links these prepolymers into long molecules; the balance between soft spring segments and hard anchor segments is set here, and it defines how much force the finished yarn needs before it stretches.
3. Dry spin the filaments. The polymer is dissolved, pushed through a spinneret and dried in a stream of hot gas, leaving filaments finer than a human hair; industry estimates put roughly nine of every ten kilograms of world output on this route.
4. Merge, finish and wind. Filaments are combined into multi-filament yarns, oiled for knitting friction and wound for covering - typically at 15, 20, 40 or 70 denier.

The correct share is set by the recovery the garment must deliver - roughly 1 to 3 percent in stretch denim, 4 to 8 percent in fitted tees, and 20 to 30 percent in medical compression. Above what the end use needs, extra elastane only adds cost, edge curl and care problems.

Heat above roughly 150 C and chlorine residue are the two fastest destroyers of spandex recovery, and both are avoidable with correct finishing curves and simple care discipline.

Heat does not melt spandex the way nylon melts; it lets the spring segments slip, so recovery fades wash by wash rather than failing at once. Is spandex material the same as elastane?

How much spandex should a T-shirt contain?
